The Arts

The Arts department at Bentley Park College is a vibrant, creative and energetic faculty. The Arts are an integral part of students’ education at the College from Prep to Year 12.
We believe that The Arts offer ways to learn about the world that include far more than spoken and written language. When students participate as artists and as audience, they engage their senses, physical skills, emotional and spiritual sensibilities, as well as their intellect to make meaning of the world. Through dance, drama, media, music and visual art we express and communicate what it is to be human and we develop, share and pass on understandings of ourselves, our histories, our cultures and our worlds to future generations.

In each of The Arts subjects, students develop an expressive ‘language’ with which to represent their observations and their response to experiences. The building blocks of that language are The Arts elements that are combined, according to particular design ‘rules’ or principles, so as to express particular feelings and ideas, just as words are combined into sentences using the rules of grammar to communicate particular meaning.

We offer a range of specialist subjects in Years 7 to 12 including Dance, Drama, Film, Television and New Media, Music and Visual Art.

Arts students at Bentley Park College are encouraged to excel and to push their creativity further by participating in workshops and competitions when such opportunities arise. Recently, Bentley Park College Arts students have participated and had success in Creative Generations Performance for Dance, The Young Company workshops, The Minister’s Art Awards and The Energy Art Exhibition, REACH workshops and exhibitions, The Cairns Show and The Cairns Festival Film competition.

Bentley Park College also has a very active Instrumental Music Program, offering small group tuition from music specialists on woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments. All students in this program play in ensembles like concert band, jazz combo and string ensemble.

Our ensembles regularly play at a range of school and community events, including The Cairns show, Eisteddfodau, Band festivals, Fanfare and our local ANZAC ceremony.
